In AD 61, Britannia has fallen into Roman hands. When the conquering army dishonours the dead King Prasutagus by violating his daughters, his wife Boudicca decides to take her country back. Iceni slave Brea remembers little of life before the Roman occupation and has grown accustomed to the conquerors’ idle, lavish lifestyle. She diligently performs her duties and cares for the innocent Aurelia, the future wife of the handsome war hero Marcellus, while never abandoning her longing for freedom and for a meeting with her long-lost father. In the present day, Hanna returns to Norfolk after years abroad, and the strange dreams that have accompanied her throughout her adolescence begin again. The dreams gradually merge with the present as she sees an apparition in the mist over the wetlands. To her astonishment, she then discovers that a new person has moved into her childhood home, someone who seems very familiar. Hanna slowly realizes that she is connected to a tragedy that occurred many years ago. Brea, meanwhile, begins to understand that her fate cannot be separated from that of her Roman master. As a general uprising draws ever closer to their home, Brea must make a fateful choice between love and loyalty, while Hanna must find a way to come to terms with the past. This Czech-language book connects two stories across time.
