Description
Eliška is a young woman with every reason to be satisfied: she is married, comfortably situated and has a beautiful daughter. Yet her marriage to Pavel has fallen into routine, and a young teacher, Matěj, her former love, appears in her life. Eliška finds herself caught between motherhood, a failing relationship and a love that has survived time and the profound changes that usually consign youthful romances to the past. Why is the boy who always called her Tenderness so irresistible, even though he lacks Pavel’s manly appearance, has a big toe poking out of his shoes, cannot drive and lives in a grandmother’s cottage whose interior resembles several decades-old television sets more than a real home? This is a story about how easy it is not to know who we really are, and how difficult it is to hear someone calling us by a name that no longer feels like our own. The novel is in Czech.
