Description

This monograph is the first original Czech work to examine in such depth and breadth one of the most prominent figures of early Christianity, Paul of Tarsus. This educated Jewish man from the diaspora became, after encountering the risen Lord, probably the most ardent preacher of the Gospel, and his dedication and abilities helped the new faith establish itself successfully in a pagan environment. Against the background of the Hellenistic world of his time, the book explores Paul’s Jewish formation and intellectual outlook before his conversion, attempts to reconstruct the basic chronology of his life, examines his missionary work in detail, and analyses his literary activity and the central themes of his theology. In seeking to provide the most complete synthetic portrait of Paul’s personality, it also addresses problematic areas and disputed questions, with particular attention to his views on family and sexuality. The book is intended not only for biblical scholars and specialists in early Church history, but also for the wider academic community and informed readers interested in the beginnings of Christianity. The book is in Czech.
