Description
Abū Alī al-Husayn ibn Sīnā, known as Avicenna, was a pivotal figure in Arabic-language thought and science. Through Latin translations produced in the twelfth century, he also exerted a decisive influence on Latin Christian philosophy. His theory of the “holy intellect,” which has so far received little attention from scholars, connects theology, cosmology, metaphysics, and psychology. It presents the prophet as an active centre of the human world, enabling an accidental historical community to be properly integrated into the order of the universe. Avicenna’s theory of prophecy transposes Plato’s philosopher king into an Islamic framework and establishes a foundation that, through Moses Maimonides and Albert the Great, helped shape the understanding of the purpose and meaning of philosophy in all three major monotheistic traditions.
