This historical study examines German Protestants in the Děčín and Šluknov border regions after the Patent of Toleration, a little-researched subject in the history of the Czech lands. It focuses on the founding of Protestant congregations in the 19th century, the church’s expansion in the early 20th century, the difficult position of German Protestants and the wide range of their activities in interwar Czechoslovakia, the spread of Nazi ideology into church circles in the 1930s, the decline of church life during the Second World War, the church’s disappearance following the expulsion of the German population from Czechoslovakia, and its spiritual and material heritage after 1945. The book places these developments in a broader geographical context, including close ties with neighbouring Saxony, and is based on primary sources from Czech and foreign archives.
