Egon Bondy’s witty utopia, or rather dystopia, was written during the darkest years of “normalization” in communist Czechoslovakia in the 1970s. Once regarded as a cult novel of the Czech underground, Unsound Siblings is not only a celebration of the “alternative way of life” of people who deliberately live outside communist state power and a mockery of the consumer ideals of a police state, but also a light parody of science fiction that organically incorporates philosophical themes. Although the work can also be described as adventure literature, evoking, for example, the setting of a “mysterious island,” its overall message has the force of a religious gospel: despite all obstacles, it is ultimately possible to live in this world. The book was first published by the émigré publishing house 68 Publishers in Toronto and circulated in samizdat copies in Czechoslovakia; it later received the Egon Hostovský Prize. M. Corner’s English translation is based on the latest Czech edition from 2024, with an afterword by David Vaughan.
