This Czech-language practical guide helps readers learn to read Early Modern and modern palaeographic texts from the early 16th to the early 20th century. It focuses on two basic types of script: Czech and German Neo-Gothic writing, especially their cursive forms, which developed alongside and influenced one another until the adoption of the General School Regulations in 1774. Since the individualization of handwriting and the resulting wide range of written forms are major challenges in learning to read texts from this period, the guide presents some of the most common forms of individual letters in Czech and German Neo-Gothic cursive and illustrates the variation in graphemes arising from each scribe’s individual style. It also includes 20 Czech-language and 20 German-language text samples with palaeographic transcriptions and accompanying commentary, examples of handwriting from writing textbooks used during the period, and an overview of the most frequently used abbreviations.
