This scholarly monograph examines the roots of the conflict that emerged in Prague at the turn of the 14th and 15th centuries and, through loyalty to its spokesman, Master Jan Hus, led Bohemia to break with the council and the emperor who handed him over to secular authorities to be burned at the stake. The end of the 14th century was a period of reform, and not only of the movement later known as Hussitism. Hus undoubtedly embodied the evangelical outlook of the Czech university elite, but other figures also played a role, including German-speaking masters, representatives of the Church hierarchy and devout laypeople. Although they shared a longing for the age of the apostles, their ideas about God, the sacraments and the Church differed. Their dialogue forms the backbone of this book, which explores meetings and conflicts between an archbishop, university masters and believers while revealing the religious roots of Central Europe.
