Description

On 1 June 1953, several major Prague industrial companies went on strike, led by the huge ČKD Stalingrad engineering and metallurgy combine. The workers protested against the social consequences of the announced currency reform, left the factory gates and even prepared a protest march to Prague Castle. The political consequences could have been far-reaching. The Communist Party leadership found itself in a precarious situation because the revolt had been sparked by the same factories that, only five years earlier, had actively helped secure the February coup in the streets of the capital. A fundamental crisis in the legitimacy of the entire system was therefore at stake. What really changed in the factories during this period? Drawing on surviving documents, including unique photographs, Jakub Šlouf reconstructs not only these forgotten events of June 1953, but also the wider atmosphere in the industry of the time. This Czech-language book examines Prague in June 1953.
