Description
Returning to St Petersburg from a Swiss sanatorium, the gentle and naive epileptic Prince Myshkin—the titular “idiot”—visits his distant relative General Yepanchin and charms the General, his wife and their three daughters. His life is thrown into turmoil when he comes across a photograph of the beautiful Nastasya Filippovna. Utterly infatuated with her, he soon becomes caught in a love triangle and drawn into a web of blackmail, betrayal and, finally, murder. Inspired by the image of Christ’s suffering, Dostoyevsky portrays Prince Myshkin as a truly beautiful soul and explores the dangers that innocence and goodness face in a corrupt world. David McDuff’s translation captures the novel’s distinctive, dreamlike language and the nervous, elliptical flow of its narrative. This edition also includes an introduction by William Mills Todd III, examining the pressures on Dostoyevsky as he wrote the story of his Christ-like hero.
