Description
Elefantazie is an original Czech musical about Joseph Merrick, the Elephant Man, presented here as a studio recording led by Tomáš Klus. Described by its creators Darek Král, Tomáš Belko and David Drábek as a musical of horrific beauty, it tells the fascinating story of the intelligent young man with a fragile soul who is trapped in a deformed body and becomes an attraction in a Victorian London freak show. The musical was first staged at Prague’s ABC Theatre, with Tomáš Klus and Tomáš Havlínek in the leading roles. It opens up a world of human curiosities and follows the lives of its inhabitants, including the legendary Blažek Siamese sisters, the wild woman Samira, Frank the Three-Legged Man and Moyzess, the giant from Galicia. The story asks who the cruel Dr Howard Reinhold is, what chance the goodness of his colleague Dr Frederick Treves has when he decides to offer the Elephant Man a home and care, who will uncover the secret of Jack the Ripper, and how London may have influenced Mahatma Gandhi. It also follows the hero’s journey from the poverty of a cage to the salons of high society. The music is composed by Darek Král, with arrangements developed together with Jan P. Muchow, while Tomáš Belko wrote the lyrics. The recordings were completed at Sono Studio, and the album features Tomáš Havlínek, Petr Konáš, Kateřina Marie Fialová, Filip Březina, Tereza Marečková, Zdeněk Piškula, Kryštof Krhovják and others alongside Tomáš Klus. Songs include “Special People”, “Blood on the Scalpel”, “Róza & Pepi”, “Elefantoletto”, “The Bestiary”, “The Innards of London”, “Snow”, “Everything Is in the Stars”, “The Lighthouse Keeper” and “A Greeting to Joseph Merrick, the Elephant Man”.
