Description
This four-CD collection presents legendary recordings by Josef Vlach and the Czech Chamber Orchestra, including works by Antonín Dvořák, Josef Suk, Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, W. A. Mozart, Benjamin Britten, Henry Purcell, Claude Debussy, Ottorino Respighi, Igor Stravinsky, Ilja Hurník and Jiří Pauer. The recordings also feature the Prague Chamber Orchestra, conducted by Josef Vlach. A violinist and conductor whose abilities deserve far greater recognition, Vlach continued the distinguished tradition and standards associated with Václav Talich. At the age of twenty-three, he helped establish the Czech Chamber Orchestra for Talich, and in 1957 revived it after its earlier dissolution. The orchestra achieved remarkable international success, including appearances in Osaka and at the Salzburg Festival, as well as tours of the United States, Germany, Great Britain, Switzerland, France and Belgium. These recordings from 1960–1982, most of them made by 1966, are among the rarest treasures in the Supraphon archive. They have undergone careful remastering, and half appear on CD for the first time.
