Descripción

Jan Fingerland’s nonfiction book is not simply another retelling of the lives of biblical women. It examines how rabbis, Christian theologians and various sects whose interpretations were later suppressed or forgotten understood these stories over the centuries. The author considers what modern fields such as anthropology, linguistics and psychoanalysis can contribute, and what the original content may conceal or what modern translations at least dilute. He also explores how painters, filmmakers and writers have interpreted the stories of biblical women, reaching surprising conclusions that often challenge commonly accepted explanations. The text is accompanied by extensive visual material. Jan Fingerland studied political science, philosophy and Jewish studies in Prague, York in England, Stockholm and Jerusalem. He currently works as a commentator for Czech Radio Plus and focuses on the culture, religion and politics of the Middle East, as well as the Bible, which he approaches as a literary work and a cultural-historical document. He is the author of the popular podcast Předvařená bible, created in cooperation with the Jewish Community Center Prague, which offers a non-religious reading of sacred stories.
