This Czech-language textbook presents a substantially revised fourth edition reflecting changes in the diagnosis and treatment of internal medicine and related specialties, as well as developments in undergraduate and especially postgraduate medical education. Although it is not intended as a universal textbook for the examination following the internal medicine core, it provides a systematic and comprehensive basis for study. Aimed primarily at medical students and doctors in the internal medicine core, it takes a practical approach while retaining the necessary theoretical background. Its chapters offer clear, up-to-date and clinically focused information on the etiology, clinical presentation, diagnosis and treatment of internal diseases, with pathophysiology covered to the extent needed to understand clinical manifestations and therapeutic procedures. The monograph provides a basic overview of the full range of diseases across internal medicine, with particular emphasis on conditions most frequently encountered in general internal practice and on acute states. These sections provide specific, practically useful guidance for diagnosis and treatment. The book also covers practical issues extending beyond individual internal specialties and selected topics from other medical fields. The author team, drawn from university hospitals, other specialist institutions in the Czech Republic and clinical practice, has been expanded to include new contributors, including young board-certified physicians. The texts were prepared with input from reviewers, experienced doctors, younger colleagues and senior medical students, and take into account readers’ comments on previous editions. The first edition received the Czech Medical Association of J. E. Purkyně award for the best book publication of 2010, while the second edition received the award of the Czech Society of Internal Medicine of the Czech Medical Association of J. E. Purkyně for 2015.
