Descripción
This Czech-language novel follows Elizabeth, who travels to the frontier to teach the children of Wild West settlers in a new one-room schoolhouse. She must cope with six-year-old youngsters and seventeen-year-old youths alike, while initially struggling even to keep the school stove burning. After moving into the teachers’ cottage, she faces discomfort, cheeky mice and the frightening howls of coyotes. But Elizabeth is not one to let adversity defeat her. The local community soon takes to her, and young bachelors begin calling at her door. Her own thoughts, however, turn to Wynne Delaney, a “horseman” in the North-West Mounted Police and the only unmarried man for miles around who is not looking for a bride and has no intention of marrying. Ever. Can Elizabeth change his mind, and what strategy of seduction can she choose that will satisfy both her conscience and God?
