The second volume of In the Grip of Treachery focuses on the First Czechoslovak Jan Žižka Partisan Brigade, one of the largest resistance groups in Moravia, and demythologizes the romantic legends created by post-war Communist propaganda. Drawing on previously unprocessed police and investigative files, the book offers a more objective view of the partisan resistance and reveals that the brigade included not only genuine heroes but also cowards and criminals. It examines the sinister role of Gestapo informers who infiltrated the brigade headquarters, as well as the darker aspects of partisan activity, including forced requisitioning from civilians and the tragedies of the burned mountain settlements of Ploština, Prlov and Vařákovy paseky. It also traces crimes that went unpunished under the retribution law. The publication aims to provide a comprehensive and balanced view of events in the Wallachia and Zlín regions, emphasizing that ordinary citizens bore the greatest burden of the war.
