In 1942, when the Eastern Front had claimed the lives of several million Soviet soldiers, the Red Army began calling up tens of thousands of women, mostly around twenty years old, to help defend the country against the Nazi invasion. Many were assigned roles as pilots, bomber crew members and snipers. This book tells the stories of these women, as historian Ljubov Vinogradova brings together authentic recollections, diaries, archival material and, above all, interviews with those who courageously defended their country in sniper units. The veterans describe their harsh training and difficult days at the front, marked by hunger and deprivation, as well as the warm friendships they formed with fellow soldiers, many of whom died in combat. Their fascinating testimony reveals a little-known aspect of the Soviet struggle against the Nazis.
