Jan Němec’s novel explores why we are with one another, bringing together the truth of life and the truth of literature, unique experience and the desire to understand its meaning. Although almost everything may have been said about love, each generation experiences it differently. At first glance, this is the story of a great romantic passion and the twists and turns of a six-year relationship. The real drama, however, lies in the stubborn and painful need to understand why it ended. Since writing is the author’s only instrument, we watch a love novel emerge from the ruins of the relationship. Every experience and conflict is viewed from different angles and examined through the grid of other texts, from The Divine Comedy to fleeting tabloid reports, while reality resists and what matters continually slips through the fingers. The author also becomes a novelistic character, crossing the boundaries of physical and intellectual intimacy in an honest struggle. If knowledge is the only morality of the novel, as Milan Kundera claims, there is no other option. The contents are in Czech.
