This Czech-language historical novel tells the story of Amelia, a mermaid who longs to understand the human world and its hearts and souls, and therefore leaves the sea to live on land. She agrees to become the main attraction in P. T. Barnum’s shows, naively believing she can leave whenever she wishes. Barnum, however, has no intention of giving her up. As Amelia discovers that the human world is not as wonderful as she imagined, she also finds love and dreams of a peaceful family life. Can she escape from Barnum and from religious fanatics, or will she remain enslaved as a museum exhibit for the rest of her days? This historical fairy tale is inspired by a real event: in the nineteenth century, P. T. Barnum actually deceived audiences by displaying the Fiji Mermaid in his show.
