Without self-pity or hypocrisy, he describes sex as a quadriplegic with a healthy libido, life trapped in the maze of the social welfare system, where a humorist finds material for his jokes, and how someone with no reason to believe in anything can discover his own faith. His scandalous work appeared in Omni, Penthouse and The New Yorker. In 2018, American director Gus Van Sant made a biographical film of the same name based on Callahan’s book Don't Worry, He Won't Get Far on Foot.
