Descripción
Although the Czech public remains interested in the reign of Maria Theresa, her final armed conflict with Frederick II the Great over the Bavarian succession in 1778–1779 is now almost unknown. There are several reasons: the war lasted less than a year, not a single major battle was fought, its outcome was decided not by generals on the battlefield but by diplomats around a negotiating table, and the soldiers spent more time procuring food, especially potatoes and plums, than fighting. This is the origin of the names “Potato War” and “War of the Plums.” Nevertheless, the conflict deserves to be remembered, not only because of its tens of thousands of victims but also because the military operations took place almost exclusively in Bohemia, Moravia and Silesia. This monograph therefore offers a comprehensive analysis of the war in the broader context of European and world history. The contents are in Czech.
