Věčný nacista – Kulish Nicholas (2016)

This biography follows Dr Aribert Heim, a Nazi doctor and SS member nicknamed Dr Death. Born in 1914 and presumed to have died in Cairo in 1992, he worked for several months at Mauthausen concentration camp in 1941, leaving behind atrocities that invite comparison with Josef Mengele. Survivors testified that he killed patients by injecting petrol directly into their hearts and performed surgery on healthy people without anaesthesia; others recalled a collection of prisoners’ skulls that Dr Heim kept on his desk to display their perfect teeth. Amid the confusion of the post-war period, he established a gynaecological practice and lived a quiet family life in Baden-Baden. Without German Nazi hunters such as Simon Wiesenthal, and especially police investigator Alfred Aedtner, Dr Heim might have remained unnoticed. After a warrant was issued for his arrest, he escaped, and his disappearance remained unexplained until the end of 2009. Nicholas Kulish and Souad Mekhennet reveal how Aribert Heim dealt in real estate, fled to Cairo, converted to Islam and lived under the Muslim name Tárik Husejn Faríd.
