Descripción

This Czech-language hardcover book examines the early development of psychiatric care in the Czech lands from the late 18th century to the 1880s, before psychiatry became a university discipline and an established science. It traces the creation and transformation of the first asylums, their organization, patients and doctors, with particular attention to Prague’s provincial institution, its branches in Bohemia and the first facilities in Moravia. The book also places this history within the wider development of psychiatry in the Habsburg monarchy and Central Europe, as well as its cultural, social and political context. Based on extensive archival research, it explores changing ideas about mental illness, the emergence of the first classifications of mental disorders and the formation of the professional language and institutions intended to diagnose, treat and control “madness.”
