Dora Čechová is a storyteller with a half-Czech, half-Russian soul. Her texts resemble studies and portraits: concentrated and carefully developed. They most often focus on relationships, particularly illuminating the perspectives of female characters in naturally lyrical and gentle language. Her stories frequently turn to the past, but without nostalgia, gloom or fear; on the contrary, they open doors to what is possible and what lies ahead. Dora Čechová presents glimpses of worlds in which people are incompatible with the political situation, making resistance a matter of course: resistance as an unconscious, natural way of life, dearly paid for through concessions and outward conformity. Seen against the everyday concerns and desires of Čechová’s characters, global political, economic and military issues reveal their blunt absurdity, writes Bas Böttcher.
