Descripción

This introduction to ethics was first published in 1972. In this early work, Bernard Williams outlines questions that remain central to his thought, including his criticism of Immanuel Kant and utilitarianism, as well as the concept of authenticity. The book’s main thesis is that reflections on morality cannot be systematised, but this does not mean that they can be abandoned or replaced by moral preaching. Such reflections must be based on argument, although they cannot be reduced to argument alone. As Williams explains in the preface, the aim of moral philosophy is not to attain indisputable knowledge, but to refine perception so that people can understand more clearly what they say, think and feel. The contents are in Czech.
