Descripción

This polemical correspondence between the German polymath Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz and the English theologian and physicist Samuel Clarke, a pupil of Newton, developed during the second decade of the eighteenth century and ranks among the best-known and most influential exchanges in the history of European thought. It consists of five letters written by Leibniz in French and five replies by Clarke in English. The central themes are the foundations of Newton’s revolutionary mathematical interpretation of reality and its consequences for mathematics, epistemology, theology and natural philosophy. The influence of the correspondents’ positions extends as far as the formulation of Einstein’s general theory of relativity. This Czech edition therefore provides valuable and necessary material, among others, for theorists and historians of natural science.
