Many people today like to imagine the development of life on Earth as an evolution towards Homo sapiens, culminating inevitably in modern humans as the “lords of creation.” This would mean regarding all the other species of organisms that emerged over billions of years as mere by-products of evolution. In this polemically conceived book, the author discusses the idea of progress in the context of organic, social and cultural development. His argument clearly concludes that the “arrow of evolution,” if one exists at all, follows no particular goal.
