Descripción
This Czech-language novel presents the story of Luis Peres Morales, a Cuban man whose actions and ideals lead him to leave his homeland. His journey brings him to the Czech Republic, where he can begin a new and completely different life, but he soon discovers that the roots of the past cannot simply be erased. Through his memories, feelings and emotions, the book offers a more truthful picture of Cuba than the one continually promoted by Fidel Castro’s government, drawing attention to an island whose inhabitants have lived without freedom for more than fifty years. It is also a story about the experience of emigration and about those who were forced to leave Fidel’s “Island of Freedom” in search of genuine freedom. The text preserves expressions, word combinations and sentence structures that a native Czech speaker might not normally use. The author explains that these features reflect his experience as a foreigner and emigrant expressing his Cuban thoughts in Czech, and that Czech friends encouraged him to retain the book in this authentic form.
