Being entirely on your own can mean facing psychological and physical aggression every day, sometimes from the person closest to you, coming home in fear, worrying about bailiffs because of an irresponsible partner, having nowhere to live, or being cut off from friends, parents and assistance. Such situations are the daily reality for women and men trapped in relationship, psychological and economic hardship, struggling for their very existence and finding it extremely difficult to escape. This practical guide examines the most difficult period of single parenthood through the experiences of seven women and their typical life situations, showing ways to handle or reduce the consequences of severe circumstances. All seven became clients of the public-benefit organisation WOMEN FOR WOMEN, which helped them at decisive moments in their lives. Their authentic, often raw and emotionally charged accounts trace the painful course from the beginning of the problem to its resolution: falling into a relationship, psychological and economic trap; living through violence and other problems; finding the growing determination to become free; and moving towards solutions and hope for a new life. Psychologists, lawyers, financial advisers and other specialists comment on the key moments in each story and provide practical advice at its end. The book also includes important contacts and a list of institutions that can help. By comparing their own experiences with those of others, readers can see that they are not alone, gain perspective, better assess their situation and mistakes, receive advice on facing or preventing specific difficulties, and find hope in the knowledge that people and organisations are ready to help.
