This book, whose contents are in Czech, tells the stories of Renaissance and early Baroque villas in Rome. It serves not only as an informed guide to the architectural and artistic treasures of the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, but also introduces readers in an accessible way to the broader cultural and political history that shaped modern Europe. Since the villas were commissioned by popes and senior officials of their courts, the book presents Rome from the perspective of the centre of the world at that time. It traces social changes and shows how the Renaissance lifestyle, inspired by the rediscovery of antiquity and connected with the cult of nature and the development of human potential, gradually shifted towards Baroque exaltation and religious devotion. The text is richly illustrated with photographic documentation and offers an engaging introduction to Renaissance thought through an interpretation of the allegorical and symbolic meanings of the villas’ decoration.
