Descripción

This book critically examines widespread simplistic ideas about gender and communication between men and women. These ideas influence attitudes towards sexual violence, expectations concerning academic performance, discrimination in the labour market and the workplace, and more. Popular literature often presents claims that are far removed from the truth: men and women show as many similarities as differences in their communication, depending on particular social roles and relationships. Cameron critically challenges biological and evolutionary explanations of gender differences, as well as the theory that childhood socialization leads boys and girls to use language in systematically different ways. She shows that existing linguistic differences often arise primarily from the need to construct one’s own sense of identity, with motivations that are highly varied and complex. The book calls for a much more nuanced approach to gender and a rejection of misleading popular myths and stereotypes. The content is in Czech.
