Willa Cather’s My Ántonia is one of the most important works of American literature and represents the height of the author’s career. It tells a profound story about childhood, roots and the search for one’s place in the world. Set during the settlement of the American Midwest at the end of the nineteenth century, when thousands of European immigrants headed for the American prairies in search of a better future, the novel follows the life of the Czech girl Ántonia Šimerdová from the moment she arrives in America with her family. Full of hope, they are unprepared for the harsh life on the prairie, and reality soon brings tragedy. Ántonia must work on farms and in the city, confronting the unpredictability of nature and people, poverty and unfulfilled love. Nevertheless, she retains her passion for life, resilience and sensitive heart. Her story is seen through the admiring eyes of her devoted American friend Jim. The novel is significant not only for its literary quality but also for its Czech dimension. With her distinctive style and deep understanding of human nature, Willa Cather portrays the landscape, characters and remarkable destinies, establishing the book as a classic of twentieth-century literature. This Czech-language edition contains the text in Czech.
