ABBA is a phenomenon without equal in the history of music. New listeners continue to discover the legendary Swedish pop group, and people still sing and dance to its hits more than half a century after they first appeared. In 2013, respected Swedish music journalist Jan Gradvall gained exclusive access to the group’s members, with whom he had already enjoyed a close journalistic relationship. He then interviewed them for roughly ten years, resulting in this book. Agnetha, Björn, Benny and Anni-Frid share their personal stories, thoughts and opinions about their own music more openly than ever before. Gradvall explains how the group’s success was shaped not only by melodic brilliance, but also by the members’ ambitions and emotional turmoil. He also carefully explores the context in which ABBA’s unique sound emerged, presenting a story about Sweden and the globalisation of pop culture. Readers will discover, among other things, how the Swedish dance-music phenomenon known as dansband influenced ABBA and how local tax legislation affected the appearance of the group’s costumes.
