Drawing on his experience of working in artificial intelligence since the early 1980s, Richard Susskind examines the history of AI and possible scenarios for its future. He sees balancing its benefits and dangers as one of the defining challenges of our time. ChatGPT and generative AI are, he argues, merely the latest chapter in an ongoing story, and we are still at the beginning of its development. Responsible thinking about AI’s impact requires looking far beyond today’s technologies, since inventions that do not yet exist may affect us far more by 2030 than the tools currently available.
