This Czech-language edition follows Huckleberry Finn after the events of The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, but presents a far more mature and significant novel, counted among the “great American novels.” The vagabond Huck Finn, who lives with Widow Douglas, comes into a great deal of money at the end of Tom Sawyer’s story. His perpetually drunk father then returns to town and eventually drags Huck away with him into the wilderness. Huck stages his own death and escapes from his father down the Mississippi River. Along the way, he is joined by Jim, an escaped slave, and their journey through the southern states begins, filled with tangled stories, danger and exciting adventures. This lively, compelling narrative also portrays the complicated relationship of contemporary society with the issue of slavery. From the beginning, the novel provoked reactions through its language, which is rough, colloquial and exuberant, just like its main character.
