After four acclaimed poetry collections and a longer creative break, Jitka Bret Srbová (born 1976) presents a collection in which life is "viewed up close." She peers into dark gaps, corners, closets, but above all into non-obvious connections. If the meaning of relationships often reveals itself in details, this law applies even more to the radiance of poems. The omnipresent people here actually control nothing, determine nothing: it’s all those "small things." "Ask. The small things will answer." Here, the elements, animals, plants, and seasons express their will. The poems are an alternative interpretation of hierarchies, outlining a new logic of cause and effect. The verses amusingly spit out chewed-up reason and circle around linear time. It’s about fragility and raw material, about surrendering to passion. When we stand among small things and are just as small, everything is equally important. Especially that which we don’t notice at first, that which we don’t want to notice at all. But beware, all of this notices us!
