Murdering with a Brick — a criminal case from old Prague
Kašpar Lén the Avenger (1908) is one of the few Czech novels written in the style of Zola's naturalism. The story of bricklayer Lén is set by Čapek Chod (1860–1927) in the everyday hustle of a burgeoning industrial metropolis, documenting the existential conditions of various social classes at the end of the nineteenth century. The credibility of the observed details from the environment of Prague's tenements and pubs, from the lives and work of workers and craftsmen, as well as from the course of the court proceedings, is enhanced by the author's use of colloquial Czech and professional slang. The tense atmosphere, the psychology of the murderer, and the unexpected conclusion of the trial — tragic or grotesque?
