In 1403, King Wenceslas IV of Bohemia and the Romans returns to Bohemia after being imprisoned by his treacherous brother Sigismund. He gradually reclaims his former powers and replaces unreliable and disloyal officials with new, faithful servants. One of them is the lord of Donín, newly appointed royal bailiff and military commander of Kutná Hora, a city whose silver mining is a crucial pillar of the king’s power. Wenceslas of Donín takes up his office in a hostile environment among the local councillors, attempting to solve the mysteries confronting the medieval city and find those responsible not only for plots against the king himself, but also for the merciless and treacherous murders of local inhabitants. Together with the bailiff, readers walk through the medieval streets of Kutná Hora, its grand houses and suburban hovels, descend into the medieval galleries of the silver mines and unravel the intrigues of the local elite in order to solve the first of the mysterious cases. The book is in Czech.
