Descripción

This Czech-language collection brings together works from the final years of Heinz Kohut’s life, in which he summarizes his work. The central essay, Two Analyses of Mr. Z, illustrates Kohut’s professional development from traditional psychoanalysis to self psychology through two long-term analyses of one man. It remains debated how far Mr. Z is based on the author himself and represents a self-analysis. The book also offers an overview of the basic concepts of Kohut’s approach. According to Kohut, the quality of a person’s relational experience with caregivers in childhood and later with a therapist is crucial to development. Important elements include empathy and vicarious introspection. In place of the relatively detached and rational analyst of traditional psychoanalysis, who often interprets and guides the patient toward reality, Kohut emphasizes an empathetic, engaged and mirroring approach, enabling the patient to experience themselves as an existing person perceived by the therapist. The final selected lecture serves as the author’s assessment, reference and message; Kohut died several months after delivering it. The book also includes a selection of his correspondence, in which he explains his ideas from a more personal perspective and presents them as an organically developing process toward an intersubjective concept of therapy.
