Descripción
This book focuses on the problems faced by an overweight child or adolescent. These problems affect not only their physical health, but above all their mental wellbeing and the development of their personality. Although adults often fail to recognise or underestimate many of the difficulties with which an overweight child struggles, they can have a lasting effect on the child’s psychological wellbeing. In recent years, paediatric obesity specialists have increasingly focused on childhood as the period when the foundations for later obesity are laid. Even so, the issue of excess weight during childhood and adolescence has so far received relatively little attention. This publication aims to help address that shortcoming by providing parents and educators with information about healthy development and the risks associated with childhood overweight. It offers practical advice on how to recognise emerging problems and how and where to help a child. It explains the options for outpatient treatment, inpatient care and children’s health resorts, how to prepare a child for a new environment, and the importance of contact with therapists. It also examines physical activity as an important part of both prevention and treatment, together with ways to introduce it at school, in sports and physical-education institutions, at camps and elsewhere.
