Ulrich Beck’s Risk Society is one of the most significant books written on the subject in more than thirty years. It has influenced not only numerous other thinkers but also the way this issue is understood as a whole. For many readers, Beck has come to embody a completely new sociological approach to ecology. His work reflects the existence of limits to growth and seeks to show how this fact is reflected in the character of modern society, how it is partly shaped by that character and how it is continually reproduced. Beck’s concept of the risk society has become established in sociology worldwide, especially because it offers a stimulating contribution to the ongoing debate about the true nature of modernity and the overall meaning of the modernization process.
