For two centuries, the railway has been a place where the stories of all kinds of passengers intersect, from political representatives, tourists, students, soldiers and workers to those who travelled against their will. This Czech-language collective monograph reconstructs everyday life on the Czech and Czechoslovak railway in all its breadth. It charts the changing nature of stations, waiting rooms and services, the development of fares, travel concessions and special types of trains, including military and hospital trains. It also explores the culture of travel, dining and sleeping cars, the first tourist guidebooks, cross-border connections and the wider importance of the railway for society, industry and settlement. Based on systematic archival research, the publication opens up the largely unexplored world of everyday railway life and offers a new perspective on a phenomenon that fundamentally shaped modern Czech history.
