Descripción

This book presents the culmination of many years of research by the renowned British historian Roger Griffin, who seeks to identify and demonstrate the essence of generic fascism while placing it within the context of numerous modernist movements. In the first part of this boldly interdisciplinary work, Griffin connects the history of fascism with literary and cultural history and theory, philosophy and social anthropology. He develops a broad, groundbreaking definition of modernism as a sociocultural movement addressing the crisis of modernity in countless forms. Its solution is sought in a new beginning of a temporalised history, or of future events directed by human beings, as a way out of decline. This concept enables Griffin, in the second part, to gradually demonstrate the reality of “fascist modernism”, advancing a view that has largely been rejected until now. He focuses on two key historical forms of generic fascism, the regimes of Mussolini and Hitler, tracing them from their ideological origins through their development as political movements gaining social support to their transformation into modernist states, ultimately collapsing in a project of destructive and self-destructive global expansion.
