In this Czech-language book, Ladislav Holý examines specifically Czech discussions of national identity and the changing yet still problematic relationship between the nation and the state during the post-Communist transformation of society. He draws on literary and historical sources as well as findings from ethnographic field research, paying particular attention to symbolic representations of what it means to be Czech. He explores how ideas of Czech identity were reflected in the debates surrounding the fall of Communism and the emergence of a new social order. The book also introduces a wider circle of Czech readers to the views of a leading European anthropologist of Czech origin.
