Descripción

Neuropathologist František Koukolík returns to the long-standing, still open question of how and why the brain creates consciousness, and what relationship exists between the brain, consciousness and self-awareness. This third edition follows research into the relationship between the brain and consciousness from 2013 to 2023. During that period, methods for examining the brains of humans and animals expanded and improved in ways that would have been difficult to imagine before the first edition in 2003. In neuroscience, information has a half-life of less than five years, so the previous second edition from 2013 required updating. The revised text describes current definitions of consciousness, its neural correlates and the evolution of consciousness, including self-awareness; altered states such as sleep, anaesthesia, hypnosis, meditation and the effects of psychedelics; and selected forms of impaired consciousness, including coma, functional disorders, autism, schizophrenia and depression. It also examines free will and the ways consciousness is influenced by the culture in which we grow up and live. The book is in Czech.
