In this philosophical and biographical study, Barbara Schmitz asks what philosophy can gain by paying closer attention to the experiences of people with disabilities. She approaches the question both as a philosopher and as the mother of a daughter who has lived with physical and mental disabilities since birth. Suicide, another major subject of the book, is also examined through personal experience, as Schmitz has had to cope with the suicides of her father and sister. She considers the role philosophy plays in shaping how wider society understands suicide, asking whether philosophers sometimes portray it as a heroic departure from life and thereby conceal the fact that it is most often an expression of utter despair. Through this inquiry, the author reaches the conviction that the experiences of ill people and those learning to live with their limitations can help anyone lead a life worth living.
