Descripción

This Czech-language historical study presents fifteenth-century Prague as a community shaped by conflict, with disputes profoundly affecting the inhabitants of the Old Town and New Town of Prague. Communal clashes arise from legal, political, social, religious and economic problems. Competition between the two towns reflects the New Town’s effort to match the burghers of the Old Town, while political and power struggles concern the privileged position of the Old Town Hall within the political landscape of the Kingdom of Bohemia. The book examines conflicts between the ruler and urban elites over municipal autonomy, between burghers and ordinary residents whose economic and political rights are limited, and between craftsmen and merchants, including disputes over the burghers’ traditional right to brew and sell their own beer. The Hussite Revolution introduces religious conflict into Prague, replacing earlier national tensions. The author also compares medieval Prague with the city in the twenty-first century, showing that communal disputes remain rooted in the fundamental nature of urban life.
