Descripción
This historical biography presents Charles IV (1316–1378), king and emperor at a time when Christianity faced a crisis and Europe was shaken by plague, the Hundred Years’ War and the beginnings of the papal schism. A member of the Luxembourg dynasty, he was born in Prague, grew up in Paris, began his rule in Italy, became king of the Romans, Bohemia, Lombardy and Arles, and finally Holy Roman Emperor. Pierre Monnet, a specialist in the political and social history of the late Middle Ages, portrays Charles IV as a figure standing between the Middle Ages and modernity. He challenges the often idealized Czech view of the Father of the Nation by emphasizing Charles’s strategic steps in expanding his territories and recalling the failures of his descendants. The contents are in Czech.
