This book is one of the best-known and most significant works of critical sociology. Thorstein Veblen offers the first systematic analysis of a way of life resulting from a social organization based more on the motive of monetary profit than on the so-called instinct of workmanship. Although written more than a century ago, his brilliant analysis and critique of a society founded solely on competition for wealth remains relevant. The work is regarded as foundational to the sociology of consumption, the sociology of fashion and the theory of consumer society. As Max Lerner writes, Americans produced the strongest and most cohesive form of monetary and commercial civilization, but also its most consistent critique, which is the central significance of Veblen’s work.
