First published in Czech in 1942, this comic novel follows a young man in love and his subversive servant Saturnin, who disrupts the peaceful rhythm of his master’s household and turns his life upside down. Saturnin draws on the tradition of Czech comedy and writers such as J. Hašek, K. Čapek and K. Poláček, while also showing the influence of English masters Jerome K. Jerome and P. G. Wodehouse. He lures his employer into an exotic world where he must live dangerously and learn to cope with any situation. Written during the Nazi occupation of Czechoslovakia, the novel offered a form of resistance by creating another world, one that was unmistakably Czech. Its popularity continued after the war and after the forty years of communism that followed. The book has been adapted for radio and television, made into a film and regularly performed on the Czech stage. It was the favourite book of Czech readers in the 2009 Czech TV survey Book of My Heart. This English edition contains an English translation of the Czech text.
